Fluoride Treatment for Kids

Prevention-Focused Care for Strong, Healthy Smiles

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and protects against decay. In pediatric dentistry, it is used to maintain the health of both baby teeth and permanent teeth as they develop.

Why We Recommend Fluoride for Kids

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that protects teeth in three important ways:

  • Remineralization: Helps rebuild weakened enamel.
  • Slows demineralization: Makes enamel more resistant to acids that cause decay.
  • Reduces acid production: Interferes with the bacteria’s ability to produce the acids that wear down teeth.

How Often Should Kids Have Fluoride?

For most children, fluoride varnish with their routine dental cleaning every 6 months is enough to keep teeth strong.

Kids at higher risk of cavities may need fluoride more often. This includes children with early decay, weaker enamel, or orthodontic appliances. In some cases, a prescription-strength toothpaste may also be recommended.

Combined with regular check-ups, daily brushing, and cavity-preventive options like sealants, fluoride plays an important role in protecting both baby teeth and permanent teeth.

Fluoride Options We Offer

Fluoride can be provided in different ways to protect your child’s teeth. At BabyTooth, we use the option that best fits your child’s age, cavity risk, and oral development.

Fluoride varnish

When fluoride varnish combines with saliva, it creates a thin, protective layer that helps the fluoride stay on the teeth longer. This allows the fluoride to do its job strengthening enamel while minimizing how much is swallowed.  We use a newer formula that is smooth, virtually unnoticeable to the patient, and better-tasting—something kids appreciate.

Fluoride gel or foam

Applied in a tray and left on the teeth for a few minutes. This method is sometimes recommended for older children.

Prescription fluoride toothpaste

For kids at higher risk of cavities, we may recommend a stronger toothpaste to use at home.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

A combination of silver, which kills cavity-causing bacteria, and fluoride, which strengthens enamel. SDF is often used to stop early decay and is sometimes paired with varnish as part of a treatment protocol. It can be a great way to “buy time” until a child is ready and able to cooperate for restorative treatment.

Fluoride supplements

For children who live in areas with well water or low natural fluoride, we provide guidance on whether supplements may be helpful.

At each dental check-up, your dentist will recommend the best approach for your child based on their age, cavity risk, and oral development.

Alternatives to Fluoride Treatments

We also offer fluoride-free options for families who prefer them. These alternatives are safe, backed by research, and can play a role in keeping teeth strong and cavity-free. Here’s how they compare:

OptionWhat It IsProsCons
FluorideNatural mineral found in water and soil that strengthens enamel and fights acid.Strong evidence for preventing cavities; helps rebuild enamel; widely recommended by the Canadian Dental Association.Possible mild fluorosis if excessive amounts are ingested.
XylitolNatural sweetener found in plants that helps reduce cavity-causing bacteria’s ability to stick to teeth and make acid.Safe to swallow; reduces cavity-causing bacteria; available in some toothpastes and rinses, as well as gum and mints.Less effective at repairing enamel; works best with regular use.
Nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HAP)A biocompatible mineral similar to tooth enamel found in egg shells, coral and rocks that helps to rebuild tooth structure.Remineralizes and strengthens teeth; fluoride-free; safe if swallowed.Newer option—fewer long-term studies compared to fluoride.

Your dentist will explain how each alternative works and highlights the ways it may be stronger or weaker than fluoride, so parents can make an informed decision.

FAQs

Is fluoride safe for children?

Fluoride has been extensively studied and is safe in the amounts used in professional treatments and fluoride toothpaste for kids. It strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities without harmful effects when applied as recommended.

At what age should my child start fluoride treatments?

Fluoride varnish can be applied as soon as a child’s first teeth appear. The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children see a dentist by their first birthday, when fluoride treatments may be discussed.

How often should my child receive fluoride varnish?

Most children benefit from professional fluoride treatments every 6 months. Children with higher risk of cavities may need them more often.

Can fluoride cause white spots or fluorosis?

Mild fluorosis can occur if a child consistently swallows too much fluoride (from toothpaste or natural sources like water high in fluoride) during the years when teeth are developing. This is why young children should use only a tiny smear of toothpaste and be supervised when brushing.

What if I prefer fluoride-free options?

We offer safe alternatives such as xylitol and nano-hydroxyapatite. Your dentist will discuss the pros and cons with you and help choose what fits your child’s needs and your preferences.

Do dentists still do fluoride treatments for kids?

Yes, pediatric dentists, including BabyTooth, still recommend fluoride varnish and other treatments because they remain one of the most effective ways to prevent dental cavities and protect tooth enamel.

Why is Calgary bringing back fluoride?

In 2022, Calgary voted to reintroduce fluoride into the city’s drinking water supply. This decision is based on strong evidence that community water fluoridation helps reduce dental decay across the population, particularly in children.

Where can I get fluoride treatments near me?

BabyTooth offers fluoride treatments and alternatives in SE Calgary. We provide prevention-focused dental services, including fluoride varnish, dental sealants, digital dental X-rays, and routine dental check-ups.
